Here's what you need to know ...

  • What is a 'domain name'
    A domain name is what you call your website, ex: www.MyCompanyWebSite.com, or www.JaneSmith.com.
  • What is 'hosting'
    Hosting is the service and location that physically stores your website content.
  • What is 'content'
    Content is the part that your eyes actually 'see' on the website. Content can be comprised of text and/or graphics. Content is typically supplied by the individual or organization for whom the website is created.
  • What is a 'page'
    For our purposes, a page can be defined as what can print on one side of an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper.
  • What is a 'graphic'
    A graphic is any symbol, logo, photo that is not actual text. It is basically a picture. Graphics are typically supplied by the client for whom the website is created.
  • What is an 'outgoing link'
    A 'link' is typically an area that you can 'click on' that will take you 'someplace else'. An 'external link' will take you to a page outside of your website. An 'internal link' will take you to another point on your own website. This could either be to a completely new page, or to a different portion of the page you are currently viewing.
  • What is a 'POP3 email address'
    A 'POP3' email address is one that you can access (read from / write through) from your own email client on your desktop. An example of this would be Microsoft Outlook which typically comes with Windows. An email address will be in the form of Jane@MyWebSite.com.
  • What is a 'hit' counter
    A 'hit counter' counts how many times someone views your page.
